What is a Sports Chiropractor?

A sports chiropractor is a branch of chiropractic practice that provides care to athletes who are interested and knowledgeable in the field.

The goal of sports chiropractic is to optimize the neuromuscular system for athletes through conservative management, rehabilitation, and performance optimization practices. Chiropractors who specialize in sports injuries are highly motivated to participate in a multidisciplinary environment in order to provide the best care to each athlete.

In order to achieve this goal, it would be appropriate to employ a multidisciplinary treatment approach that may involve manipulation, mobilisation, soft tissue therapy, electrotherapy, rehabilitation and other movement/exercise therapies, nutritional advice, strapping, and bracing, among others. They are used to manage acute, subacute, and chronic injuries, as well as to predict and prevent injuries and maximize sports performance through the pursuit of optimal neuromusculoskeletal function.

What Does a Sports Chiropractor Treat?

An athlete can find relief from pain, prevent further injury, and speed their recovery by contacting a sports chiropractor. If repetitive movements stress various areas of the body, even small issues can become problematic in the long run. Neck, back, knees, hips, shoulders, and feet are among the most common areas treated.
They work with these patients to:

  • Recover faster from intense training,
  • Heal quickly from injuries,
  • Prevent sports injuries in the future,
  • Reduce adhesion and tension affecting muscles, fascia, and ligaments,
  • Reduce adhesion and tension that is inhibiting correct biomechanics and function,
  • Restore joint alignment,
  • Increase flexibility and range of motion,
  • Improve balance and posture,
  • Ensure that training activities are safe, and
  • Relieve and prevent pain caused by a specific activity.

When a chiropractor works with an athlete, he or she is always seeking to return them to a normal training schedule and peak performance as soon as possible.

Difference Between a Regular and a Sports Chiropractor

A sports chiropractor holds a separate degree or certification in sports medicine, which distinguishes him or her from a "regular" chiropractor. To become a licensed Sports Chiropractor, we must meet strict guidelines set by the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians.

Typically, sports chiropractors' training involves treating and evaluating not only the spine, but also other areas, such as the extremities (arms, hands, feet, ankles, knees, shoulders, etc). Additionally, a sports chiropractor also has advanced training in soft tissue skills, including various assessment tools, rehabilitation of injuries, and injury prevention.

The treatment times of sports chiropractors are often longer than those of average chiropractors because sports chiropractors use techniques and methods apart from the adjustment as their only resource.

Is a Sports Chiropractor in Burnsville, MN For You?

Seeing a sports chiropractor can be of benefit to anyone! That's the short answer to your question!

A sports chiropractor can help you prevent injuries and rehabilitate injuries, whether you are an amateur, professional or recreational athlete. You might just want a coach who has a strong understanding of your sport and can assist you in training to move up the levels or prevent common injuries from overuse?
In that case, an experienced sports chiropractor will also be able to help.

Perhaps you're not an athlete who is unable to get an accurate diagnosis or treatment plan, or has been to numerous providers without resolution.

Sports chiropractors can help if you're looking for a provider who understands that.

What Training & Certification Do Sports Chiropractors Need?

A sports chiropractor is also a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC). These practitioners must also complete specialized coursework, research, and clinical training in addition to their four-year doctoral graduate degrees. Sports chiropractors are accredited by the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians. Two types of certification are offered:

● Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP®) and
● Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (DACBSP®).
Topics of postgraduate study include injury prevention, exercise science, and rehabilitation.

We Specialize in Sports Chiropractic

Chiropractic treatment is based on functional muscle testing and movement analysis by our experienced team of chiropractors. Clinical treatments are often given on a symptomatic basis, since the human body is a complex system. The goal of our movement impairment treatment is to discover what is causing your impairment, and to address it directly. As we are able to observe both muscles and joints, we can treat the body as a whole.

We provide injury prevention and rehabilitation care to athletes, and offer treatment plans that help them return to their sports faster.

I have been seeing chiropractors for 20 years now and Dr. Alex along with seeing PT Megan is hands down the best experience I have had. As athletes themselves, they really understand the demands training can place on the body and they work together to get you moving correctly to fix injuries and prevent future issues....

They are skilled and compassionate. I arrived in quite a bit of pain with no lasting relief from other PT and Chiros. Dr. Alex and Megan are very supportive and knowledgeable, creating a trusting environment focused on a long term individualized healing plan. After only a few sessions and at home simple exercises, my pain diminished significantly... I highly recommend them both!

I’ve been to a dozen different chiropractors over the years and for the most part enjoyed my (perhaps 150) visits, but always found that the next day I felt like I needed to go back ...it left me with a love/hate relationship with chiropractors.
